With their amazing bold colors and their sweet flavor.<br>So today, allow me <strong>to teach you how to roast strawberries [with basil and vanilla! <\/strong><em><strong>yum<\/strong><\/em><strong>] and use them to give a twist to your recipes<\/strong>, from oatmeals to ice-cream and cakes. Cuz they're oh-so-versatile (and juicy...and delish)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you as excited as I am? These strawberries really caught my attention.<br>Not all that glitters is gold though! Being the first of the seasons, they were a bit too sour than I expected. Happened to you too, right?<br>Don't panic though, <strong>there's a cooking method that always, ALWAYS, save bland food: roasting <\/strong>(let's call it the \"solution\", shall we).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-2.jpg\" alt=\"How to make roasted strawberries\" class=\"wp-image-7962\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-2.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-2-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-2-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption>This cooking method ALWAYS saves bland fruit!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roasting (sour &amp; underripe) strawberries is your chance to make them taste AMAZING!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm a HUGE fan of roasting, I think I already told you a few months ago when talking about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/en\/roasted-vegetables-winter-edition\/\">these<\/a><\/strong> roasted vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roasting enhances the flavors through <strong>Maillard reaction<\/strong> (if there's also protein)<strong> and caramelization <\/strong>(of the sugars). I love roasting veggies and fruit for this reason! Remember when I <a href=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/en\/chocolate-pear-oatmeal\/\">grilled pears for my oatmeal<\/a>? Well, I was \"using\" this reaction (caramelization) to make them <strong>taste incredible<\/strong>. Spoiler: slow roasted strawberries are the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The marvelous thing about these roasted strawberries is that <strong>they won't become mushy<\/strong>, instead they'll become soft without losing their shape.<br>The <strong>smell<\/strong>? Kinda reminds strawberry jam's.<br>Not to mention the <strong>syrup<\/strong>: while roasting, the strawberries will release their juices that, together with honey or maple syrup, will form a thick and sweet syrup.<br> Ok, this description is making my mouth water!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how to roast strawberries perfectly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>(store them in the fridge until you're ready to use)<\/li><li>Clean them well: wash them under running water (do not soak);<\/li><li>Dry them with a cloth;<\/li><li>Remove the stems;<\/li><li>Slice each strawberry in half (or in small pieces) and put them into a bowl;<\/li><li>Add honey\/maple syrup (or nothing, if they're flavorful), vanilla, basil leaves (optional);<\/li><li>Toss well;<\/li><li>Arrange them onto a lined baking tray;<\/li><li>Bake;<\/li><li>ENJOY!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-3.jpg\" alt=\"Roasted strawberries backlit photography \" class=\"wp-image-7966\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-3.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-3-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-3-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/How-to-roast-strawberries-3-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption>Roasted strawberries on ice cream? YES PLEASE!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there something that is holding you back? FAQs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I know you're thinking this may be a \"waste\". I mean, <em>why roasting a delicious fruit<\/em>, right? Well, I'm here to answer some of your questions. Cuz, friend, it would be a \"shame\" if you didn't try these, trust me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Why should you roast strawberries?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned above, roasting <strong>enhances<\/strong> the <strong>flavors<\/strong> through the <strong>Maillard reaction <\/strong>(see next question)<strong> and caramelization<\/strong>. Roasting brings out their sweetness and juiciness!<br>My advice? If your strawberries already taste good, eat them as they are or roast them without adding any sweetener.<br>Instead, <strong>roast them if they're a bit underripe<\/strong> or if you went strawberry picking with friends and fam and now you have tons.<br>One more reason: the liquid sweetener will form a thick syrupy that is delish, almost caramel-ish!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What's the Maillard reaction? Is it different from caramelization?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that gives the food a distinctive flavor.<br>This reaction occurs when both protein and sugars are present at 300\u00b0 F (150\u00b0 C). These roasted strawberries taste like jam: they're sweet and syrupy. Perfect with both sweet and savory.<br>You can use them to:<br>- garnish on your oatmeal, yogurt or ice-cream;<br>- top pancakes, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/en\/no-baking-powder-waffles-whole-wheat-flour\/\">waffles<\/a><\/strong> and french toasts;<br>- make a delicious bruschetta (and don't forget to drizzle some balsamic vinegar);<br>- enrich smoothies;<br>- make amazing <em>nice-cream<\/em>;<br>- on top of custards;<br>- decorate cakes, pavlova and cheesecakes;<br>...let the imagination run wild!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What pairs well with strawberry?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, strawberries pairs well with: basil, mint, thyme, vanilla, rose water, other berries, rhubarb (of course), chocolate (OMG *drooling*), ricotta, feta, cream, balsamic vinegar, some veggies...<br>You can put strawberries into salads, on bruschetta (yup) and risotto (ever tried it? I love it).<br>Strawberry's sweet but slightly sour natural flavor complements other richer and complex foods. Try and experiment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, well...I have no more words to say.
