And the \"world\" of light in food photography is even more magical, in my opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Light is the most important part in photography.<br>The word itself says so: you probably know that it comes from the Greek <em>phot\u00f3s<\/em> and <em>graph\u00e9<\/em>. Nothing. What would you see?&nbsp;<strong>Pitch black<\/strong>.<br>Same with photography. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Light is the essence.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that you could think this is a very basic topic but trust me: in these past few years I've learned there's always something to learn about it (and I wish someone told me that, earlier in my career).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enough talking, let's see<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> 5 tips on how to master light in food photography<\/span><\/strong>, and HOW you can actually <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">implement<\/span><\/strong> the following advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \"Bad\" light in your workspace? <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Analyze<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOh, I have such a bad light in my workspace!\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people said to me these words, in the past. More than once.<br>Well, good news: there\u2019s no RIGHT OR WRONG light, bad or good.<br>Light is light. Instead, you have to understand WHY you think it looks \"bad\" in your photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It's also a little bit subjective: what I\u2019ve noticed is that some people think it\u2019s \"bad\" because in their space the light is too intense, others because they think they don\u2019t have enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day it really depends on the result (mood, message) you\u2019re trying to achieve.&nbsp;<br>And every workspace has its potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt; <span style=\"font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\">IMPLEMENT TODAY:<\/span><br>Take time to analyse your workspace and see what it has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself where your light is coming from, where the window is facing, where's your scene compared to the source of light, if your room has colored elements (walls, furniture...) etc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then think about how you can take advantage of the space and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">manipulate<\/span><\/strong> light accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: if you have colored walls you may have color contamination, in your photos. I am talking about natural light in this paragraph.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Flat images? <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shadows<\/span> are key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not ignore shadows.<br>Seems pretty obvious but it\u2019s not (at least not to me at the very beginning). Here's why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people looooove playing with a bright atmosphere, thinking they only need a looooot of light. But oftentimes this leads to paying less attention to shadows.<br>(Please, no reason to feel \u201cguilty\u201d, I used to do this too.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lack of shadows means your photos may look flat.<\/span><\/strong><br>Not saying they always have to look intense and dark. But they have to be there.<br>Even if soft and very subtle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that our goal is to have a three-dimensional photo.<br>YES, even though we want an airy ethereal atmosphere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My tip when the shadows are very subtle: find an expedient to give even more depth to the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> IMPLEMENT TODAY<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know what your workspace has to offer, the type of light you have and how it behaves, learn how to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">manipulate<\/span><\/strong> it paying extra attention to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">how the shadows look<\/span><\/strong> (especially if you have the tendency to avoid them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harsher shadows? Softer? How about the contrast? How much tonal contrast do you have in the photo? See how the shadow is subtle but visible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Is something \"off\"? <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Expos<\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">e correctly<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ETTR? ETTL?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\"What does that even mean?\"<\/em> , I hear you saying.<br>It means \u201cExposing to the right\u201d (ETTR), and \u201cExposing to the left\u201d (ETTL) - (compared to the histogram).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the debate is still going on.<br><strong>Is it better to overexpose a tiny bit? Or underexpose?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have always been team ETTR and recently invested in a workshop with the AMAZING <a href=\"http:\/\/mariannasantoni.com\">Marianna Santoni<\/a> (she's a guru and has been teaching for years and years) that confirmed what I thought. She very well explained it from a technical perspective and I was happy to finally receive confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an 8-hour workshop so it would be impossible (and it wouldn't be fair for teacher and those who invested) to share everything, but ONE thing you have to know is that: <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you have to develop the habit of exposing to the right<\/span><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaning you have to play with the settings - ISO, aperture, shutter speed - to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">let a lot of light in<\/span><\/strong>, so you collect as many information as you can, while shooting. CHECK YOUR HISTOGRAM: where are the information?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(If you don't know what I am talking about, take a step back and read this post on <a href=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/en\/food-photography-camera-settings\/\">camera settings for food photography.<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3.png 800w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-768x1152.png 768w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-720x1080.png 720w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-360x540.png 360w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-180x270.png 180w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/light-and-color-harmonies-3-150x225.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overexposing<\/strong> (without blowing out the brightest and essential** - I said essential, read below why -  areas) <strong>has<\/strong> <strong>multiple <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">advan<\/span><strong>tages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long story short, from a technical point of view it allows you to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">collect a lot more information <\/span><\/strong>on the bright areas so then, when you decrease the exposure while editing, you don't lose any important detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The website <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thewayeyeseesit.com\/2013\/04\/12\/image-tonality-and-the-histogram-part-four-the-magic-in-the-middle\/\">thewayeyeseesit.com<\/a><\/em> indeed says: \u00a0<em>\"Most of the light-capturing capability of a digital camera sensor is geared toward the bright side of the tonal scale, recording a lot of detail in the lightest areas of the picture. Unfortunately, the middle and three-quarter tones in a scene don\u2019t get recorded with as much accuracy. You have to increase exposure in post production. If you increase it though, you will also increase noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to that, if you decrease it you gain more detail and win a sharp photo. Try!;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[And yes, it's extremely important that you <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">always EDIT your photos<\/span><\/strong>. Yes, when you expose to the right the image on the camera screen may be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">very bright<\/span><\/strong>, but trust the process. Also remember that image is just a <em>jpg<\/em> that the camera shows you.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> IMPLEMENT TODAY<\/span><\/strong>:<br>While shooting, always <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">check the histogram on your camera (or PC, if you tether)<\/span><\/strong>: what is it telling you? Where are your information? More on the left? On the right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case it's more on the left, the image may be underexposed. So increase the exposure (play with ISO, aperture, shutter speed) until you have more information on the right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>EXAMPLE - PHOTO BELOW:<br>(zoomed 100%) One photo has <strong>higher ISO and overexposed<\/strong> while shooting (then decreased the exposure of -1,3 in Lightroom), the other has a <strong>lower ISO and underexposed<\/strong> while shooting (then increased exposure of +0,5). Light in food photography has a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">meaning<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using light to communicate, one of my favorite topics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know what your workspace offers, how you can manipulate light and how to expose correctly, it's time to think about WHAT you can say with light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our purpose as photographers is to communicate a message, right?<br>Otherwise, what\u2019s the point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple words: different level of brightness, contrast and direction of light, combined together, they all give a different result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">usage depends on what you are trying to say<\/span><\/strong>, without forgetting it has to complement the subject itself (think about texture, shape...)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The photo below is much more likely to say \u201cFall\u201d instead of \u201cSpring\u201d. Where you are... what time it is.<br>And SO. MUCH. MORE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> IMPLEMENT TODAY<\/span><\/strong>:<br>Instead of using light on autopilot, try to manipulate light to convey the message <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">YOU<\/span><\/strong> want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, first decide WHAT you want to evoke. What does that food tell you?<br>Then think about how your shadows\/highlights need to look, the level of contrast, the intensity of light, in order to convey <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THAT<\/span><\/strong> message...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they<\/span><\/strong> saying? And what do <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you<\/span><\/strong> want to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Colors<\/span><\/strong> are equally important to light in food photography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In photography, colors are as important as light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long story short, we perceive them because we see light and its wavelengths.<br><em>\u201cColor is important when it comes to setting people\u2019s expectations regarding the TASTE of food and drink.\u201d<\/em> I read once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True.<br>So, how can we actually combine them together?
