K. Rowling and her Fantastic beasts. Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, my friend, finding the perfect props and building a <strong>collection without spending an arm and a leg<\/strong>, is almost a matter of magic. Or luck. Or savvy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post will be helpful (hopefully!) especially for those of you who are just starting out.<br>I'm gonna share some tips on how to build your collection, <strong>based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">my<\/span> experience and my mistakes.<\/strong> Because yes, it's easy to fall into the \"cute-but-useless-prop\" trap! OR what is the style you aim to?<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: my style is kinda <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rustic<\/span> (see the bowl below?), so I really love incorporating vintage props (bowls, cutlery, tins...) into my photos.<br>But I didn't know that at the beginning, so now I have a few pieces that I never use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you prefer a \"cleaner\" look for your photos? Then choose more \"neutral\" props, not necessarily vintage (but still matte, remember).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're still developing your style, try to analyze other people's photos and what you like most. What's the style you're aiming to? Therefore, I need a combination of things that I'll use in both cases (I can use pie tins, for example, for both savory and sweet pies).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you shoot <strong>savory<\/strong>, like pies, soups, pasta, salads, meat etc, you'll need bowls, plates, bigger cutlery, maybe a pie pan...<br>If you usually shoot <strong>sweet<\/strong>, you'll probably need a cute muffin tin (example), smaller cutlery, smaller plates...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How gorgeous is this pie pan? That's what I like! Versatility. Props I can use over and over. <br>In this photo, I've used my vintage pie pan as a serving dish for falafel. If you love wider scenes, you'll need a larger amount of props too (unless you go minimal - <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.it\/pin\/150941024995442404\/\">example<\/a><\/strong>).<br>If you LOVE your macro lens like me instead, then at the beginning you'll need just a few pieces (or no props at all!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">WANT TO LEARN MORE? I have too many knives (I have 6, not 3), and I usually use one or two. In this case I'm definitely not a good example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2254\" src=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1-768x1154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1-1022x1536.jpg 1022w, https:\/\/healthylittlecravings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Food-Photography-props-5-1-1363x2048.jpg 1363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you really need to buy forks, spoons and knives because you don't have any, my advice is to buy 3 of each, maximum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT, if you can only find sets (I recently bought a set of loaf pans because it was convenient compared to buying a single one), consider giving them away to other photographers like you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\"><li><strong>Is it \"too much\"? Is it distracting?<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember what you're photographing: <strong>FOOD<\/strong>, not props. Your props are just an \"addition\". They contribute to tell a story, but they are not the main characters.<br>So, avoid pieces that are \"too much\", too distracting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheap VS \"fancy\"<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"cheapfancy\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, also in life, my philosophy is \"<strong><em>it's not the quantity but the quality, that counts<\/em><\/strong>\".<br>Same with props. I prefer spending 25 \u20ac for one gorgeous handmade ceramic bowl, than 8 \u20ac for three cheap bowls that aren't that cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, I'm not saying you NEED to spend money in fancy props.<br>There are dozens of cheap pieces out there with a decent quality and \"performance\" (= looks good in photo).<br>This is the latest addition to my collection, and it's from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/p\/gladelig-plate-gray-00457155\/\">IKEA<\/a> (it's called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/p\/gladelig-plate-gray-00457155\/\">Gladelig<\/a><\/em>). And keep asking yourself the questions above (<em>Is it my style? Is it versatile? Do I already have too many of these?) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few months ago, I felt I needed a vintage\/used cutting board, to give more depth to my flatlays.<br>I was lucky to find it at a local thrift store. (solution!)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"solution\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>I wish someone told me I can shoot without props.<br>If you absolutely cannot afford to buy them, well... focus on food!<br>You can take amazing photos without using props (or using just one), did you know that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use your backdrop only, some parchment paper, a napkin, or just your tray. OR your food (crumbles, seeds...).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B_fOZXmJIcV\/\">this<\/a><\/span><\/strong> photo, I've only used a blue napkin.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9E1pCvqApT\/\"><strong>Here<\/strong><\/a> instead I focused on the cinnamon rolls and nothing else.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9USWm3qMas\/\">This<\/a><\/span><\/strong> cake photo? I've only used parchment paper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>P.S. You can find props everywhere, I suggest you spending some time to find the best deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, it's up to you: you can buy one expensive (maybe higher quality though) prop, or a few more cheaper (but still cute) pieces!
