They’ve been telling us to drink and hydrate for ages, is it true? After all, our body is made of water (source Italian Ministry of Health: water represents 60% of men’s weight, 50-55% of women’s weight – due to our fat reserves – and 75% in newborn). Hydration is essential.
Can you believe me if I tell you that almost two years ago, I struggled with drinking just one liter of water? I completely forgot to drink and I wasn’t aware of hydration benefits. I remember that in 2015 I went to a pharmacy to do a hydration test and the results were pretty bad. My skin was so dehydrated, even if not visible at naked eye.
How much should we drink?
Obviously, it depends. Depends on our characteristics (age, weight…), diet, lifestyle, work… What I wrote above, under My experience, is our body response to dehydration. It’s a vicious circle: sense of thirst decreases, you drink less water, our body dehydrates and so on. Reason why whenever you are thirsty you have to drink immediately. Try also to anticipate the sense of thirst to find hydro balance and avoid dehydration.
Despite all this, here’s the cool thing: the more you drink, the more you get use to thirst. Yes, you’re working out your sense of thirst. I went from drinking few glasses a day, to 1.5 liters, then 2, 2.5 and now 3 (or more if my body needs it – in case of extreme movement or hot weather). This is, in fact, is my first advice: do it gradually.
Drinking too much is also not good as you think. For example, if you drink a lot during meals the risk is to dilute gastric juices that are essential in digestion process, so it slows.
What to drink
Simply mineral water.
You may have noticed that TV ads try to fob us off with low sodium water. Nothing more wrong than that! Sodium is essential to keep our vital functions, remember. And don’t try to cut off SALT from your diet. The key is to balance.
Tips to drink more
So here are my tips to drink more water. All of them are based on my experience. If you have any suggestion, please comment and I will add it to the post.
About two years ago, I discovered an app called Plant Nanny – no, it’s not sponsored. Plant Nanny is an app that reminds you to drink during the day. It basically works like this: you drink, let’s say one glass, you water the little plant. The more you drink, the more you water it, the more it grows.
This first little trick does work only in the short term. You can’t keep doing it for a long time, reason why you can abandon it as soon as you realize you’re drinking but not watering the plant (is it clear?)
Other lil tricks:
- Keep a bottle of water always with you (on your desk, in your bag…);
- Drink with a straw, seems weird but it works. It’ll look like you drink more;
- Use small bottles, so you know how much you’re drinking and you’ll feel like you’re drinking quickly (at least at the beginning)
- When you’re thirsty, drink immediately
- When you crave junk food, drink!
If you drink one glass in the morning, one at mid-morning, one before lunch, one for break, one before dinner and one before bed…they’re already six! Just find some other moments to drink and …problem solved!
My friends, there is no magic here, you just have to work out that sense of thirst!
